Your Help is Needed!
The Unity Shoppe is announcing a Capital Campaign to purchase a $3-million building!
Unity lost its rights to lease or purchase Victoria Hall for program use, fundraising purposes, and the annual Unity Telethon, which accounts for one third of their annual budget. The loss of the use of this property was devastating to Unity! To continue providing their many services, it was determined that a new building was necessary to accommodate Unity’s many needs. An exceptional building located at 110 West Sola, a block from Unity’s present facilities, has been secured.
The generous support of $1,000,000 from Harold and Annette Simmons begins Unity’s Capital Campaign. The Unity Board of Directors has secured and additional pledge of $100,000 to demonstrate support of this effort, leaving a balance to be raised of $2.7 million. It is the hope of Mr. and Mrs. Simmons that their support will encourage others to join them in helping the Unity Shoppe continue serving so many in our community.
The new facility will provide more space for the Family and Senior Service Programs, Job Smart, Inventory Processing, Youth and Job Training, Disaster Services when needed by the community plus a dedicated area for fundraising and educational programs.
In 1917, Drs. Pearl Chase and Hazel Severy began the work of the Unity Shoppe. They coordinated services to eliminate duplication so more people could be helped. Staying faithful to the core vision of our founders, Unity has created a “Central Distribution Facility” for the use of everyone in the County of Santa Barbara. Today over 22,000 clients are now referred to Unity by 300 other non-profit agencies, churches, schools and hospitals. The additional 10,000 square feet for program services will reduce Unity’s fixed overhead by almost $20,000 per month and allow for future growth.
Over 65,000 client-visits are now made annually by those who are referred and qualified. No one is ever turned away. Their generous support made it possible for The Unity Shoppe to become the single largest direct distributor of food and clothing in the County of Santa Barbara.
