On Friday, September 13, 2002, we closed escrow on our new building located at 1219 State Street thanks to the generosity of Pierre Claeyssens. Mr. Claeyssens led the campaign with a million dollar challenge grant to give us the opportunity to raise the balance of the funding to purchase a new building for the Unity Shoppe. The following board members serving in 2002 helped to make the “Miracle on State Street ”possible: Bob Smith, Chairman of the Board, Kenny Loggins, Herb Simon, Andy Granatelli, Morrie Jurkowitz, Robert Veloz, Robert Emmons, Richard Graham, Paula Lopez, Carolle VanSande, Bill Nicholson and Joseph Lake.
Barbara Tellefson and Tom Reed turned all their efforts into raising the additional million dollars needed to purchase our new home and to renovate what once was the old State Street Theater.
Our first Town Council donated large pledges:
Pierre Claeyssens, Mr. and Mrs. John Goldman, Weingart Foundation, Herb Kendall, the Rotary Club, Santa Barbara Foundation, Hutton Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Smith, Herb Simon, City of Santa Barbara, San Marcos High School Students, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Granatelli, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Emmons, Mr. and Mrs. Morrie Jurkowitz,Mr. and Mrs. Bob Veloz, Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Loggins, Alice Cox, Jewish Endowment Fund, Michael Towbes, Venoco, Mr. and Mrs. William Gustafson, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nicholson, Dave Gonzales, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wisner and Barbara Tellefson. There is a magical Village called Unity-ville in the hearts of many people in Santa Barbara, California. Visit the whimsical railway depot, the wharf, police station, fire department, real estate office, the Bank of Unity-ville, the western hardware store, the little red school house and the old world Mexican Food Market.
Take a stroll down Loggins’ Court and visit Smith’s Plaza and Barbara’s Loft . You will experience the “magic” of this very special Village! It is here that people of all ages, races, creeds and color work together to help their low-income neighbors. The people of Unity-ville work
together to serve all those that are referred with dignity and respect for their needs.
The child within us is set free in our special Village as we seek to find the
heroes among us.
