More Reasons to Give to the Unity Shoppe
A Central Distribution Facility for the use of the clients of all non-profits can eliminate duplication of giving so more people can be helped with better and more consistent support services year-round. People can rely on daily services, when needed, so they don’t have to run all over town looking for help during times of crisis.
Pierre Claeyssens made the “Claeyssens Community Training and Resource Center” at 1219 State Street possible. The Unity Shoppe operates a “Free Grocery and Clothing Store” and a necessity center for the use of over 14,000 clients. They are given the opportunity to shop for their family needs restoring dignity and self-respect.
$500,000 in food supplies is needed to help all the families referred just during the holiday season.
The Unity Shoppe needs $10,000 to purchase the meat products needed for 1/2 of the families referred during the holiday season. Unity Shoppe relies on community support to provide the balance of 1,000 meat products. Over 2,000 hams, chickens and turkeys are needed.
During the month of December alone, 2,500 families will rely on the Unity Shoppe. Throughout the year an addtional 5,000 family visits are made to the Unity Shoppe.
Members of our community purchase food in local grocery stores for distribution in the Unity Shoppe’s “free store.” The Unity Shoppe purchases additional nutritional food with funds collected to supplement the food supplies donated and collected in community food drives.
Every social services and non-profit agency in the County can send qualified clients to the distribution center. This eliminates duplicate support services to the same families so funding is not wasted. Items are not given to those that cannot use them because clients can choose what they need and want.
Donated funds are used to purchase wholesale close-out merchandise so better and more products can be added to our inventory. The “free store” is stocked with baby items, preschool gifts, girls’ and boys’ toys, dolls, balls, radios, watches, as well as children’s clothing, books, art and school supplies. Over 7,800 children are referred annually.
The Unity Shoppe acts as a Prevention Program.
Low-income families are given the opportunity to shop for needed food and clothing so they can pay their rent while working toward self- sufficiently. This prevents welfare dependency and homelessness. It allows the family to remain stable and the parents are rightfully viewed as the caretaker by their children.
3,500 Children volunteer and are referred to the Unity Shoppe to fulfill their Community Service Hours. They are taught merchandising, customer relations, office skills and how to contribute to their community. Useful work skills are learned for future job opportunities.
