Programs

Unity serves residents in need by providing essential services that offer them choice and preserve their dignity and self-respect.

We strive to be as effective as we can be across the the following categories of service:

  1. Health
  2. Employment Readiness
  3. Human Services
  4. Education
  5. Youth Development

1) HEALTH & WELFARE MAINTENANCE THROUGH FOOD DISTRIBUTION

At Unity’s Grocery Distribution Center, clients have the opportunity to shop in a store-like setting for groceries that support a healthy and well-rounded diet, as well as for other household necessities, personal care products and clothing.

2) EMPLOYMENT READINESS AND EDUCATION FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH

To get the County’s unemployed the skills they need to return to the workforce, Unity’s workforce readiness program, known as Job Smart, provides practical services to hundreds of low-income men, women, and young adults — including resume writing and interview skills coaching, as well as professional clothing for job interviews and employment.

Our program also works to meet the needs of unskilled youth who need training in skills transferable to employment and in order to meet their schools’ requirements for performing community service. Disabled youth have an opportunity to learn new skills and feel they are contributing something of value to Unity.

3) HUMAN SERVICES

As the number of impoverished seniors and disabled county residents continues to grow, Unity’s Seniors Helping Seniors Center works to fulfill basic needs requests from hospitals, senior service centers, and other organizations helping seniors and disabled citizens throughout the County who are homebound or disabled.

In a typical year, 600 senior volunteers serve over 3,100 homebound seniors and disabled adults with customized care packages based on their individual needs.

4) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS, ADULTS AND YOUTH

We recruit, train, and manage more than 1,700 volunteers throughout the year in order to have the personal power necessary to co-create long-lasting positive changes in the lives of our County residents.

Hundreds of trained senior volunteers use their skills in wood-working, sewing, knitting to create toys and presents, distributed during the holidays and throughout the year. Youth volunteers are trained in volunteership, providing them with the opportunity to fulfill community service hours, work, and learn job skills in a culturally sensitive environment.

5) EMERGENCY RECOVERY

When a crisis of any magnitude occurs, it’s important to have an organization already in place that our Community can turn to for support.

There is no other emergency recovery program in Santa Barbara County that is long term, offering all critical necessities under one roof for as long as it’s needed!

6) SEASONAL SHOPPES

Thousands of children rely on Unity’s Back-to-School Shoppe each fall for new school clothing, backpacks and all of their school supplies.

During the winter holiday season, thousands of Santa Barbara County children, along with their families, select their favorite toys and gifts (new and handmade).
